Phillip Island is a delightful marine destination at the entrance to Western Port Bay in southern Victoria. Meet tiny penguins and other wildlife on long stretches of sandy beaches, surf the waves of Bass Strait, explore lush reserves and wetlands, and drive on Australia’s unique Grand Prix circuit.
Phillip Island’s terrain is diverse, with rugged rock formations on the south coast and quiet beaches on the Western Port Bayside. For surfing and swimming, head to shallow Woolamai Beach. Located on the island‘s south shore, it is monitored by lifesavers. Head to Smyths Beach for surfing lessons, where the waves are less rough. Ventnor Beach, Anchorage Beach and Red Rock Beach, located on the island’s north side, offer spectacular views over the Mornington Peninsula. Families should head to Cowes Beach, which is shallow even at high tide and has a jetty. Lifesavers monitor the beach so you can let your children play in peace.
As well as surfers and bathers, penguins also congregate at Summerland Beach. Come at dusk for the Penguin Parade. You can see the adorable little penguins waddling home from the beach to their nests. The penguins can also be seen free of charge from the nearby Cape Nobbies and the plank boardwalk at Seal Rocks.
Don’t forget to visit Phillip Island Wildlife Park, where kangaroos roam free in an idyllic natural environment, and Cape Umalai State Fornal Reserve, a scenic headland spread with beautiful indigenous flora. At the Koala Conservation Centre, you can watch koalas slumbering in the tall eucalyptus trees from an aerial walkway set amongst the trees. Visit nearby Churchill Island. It is home to historic farms, rich wetlands and the cultural heritage of the ancient indigenous Bunurong people.
The Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit, home to international car and motorbike racing championships, is also a must-see. You can see some of the world’s fastest drivers in action as they race their vehicles. Take a guided circuit tour, visit the History of Motorsport display or ride a go-kart around the mini-circuit.
